No, it's brainwashing that is the biggest obstacle, the cultural residue of five thousand years of patriarchal and misogynistic traditions that train us to sabotage each other. The examples are innumerable. The contemporary form of address "you guys" , ubiquitous in the media and colloquial speech, "disappears" women by canceling us out just as "mankind" and "Mrs." do. Worst of all is the word "God". If you want male domination with all its rape and wars and violence as "entertainment" in sports and the media, this word alone goes far to accomplish it, because a male

For those close to NYC, you might be interested in knowing that a pop-up Museum Of Motherhood is invested in doing just those things! Located at 401 East 84th St (at 1st ave), it offers HERstorical perspectives with Birth Panels - Exploring Birth Practices from the 10th Century to the present, a Suffragette sitting room, Seneca Falls parlor, art by Feminist Mothers and a four month exhibit called, 'Mother The Job', that explores mother-work as unpaid labor. Frankly I'm thrilled to have my piece "sometimes a cigar is just a cigar" accepted into the show, and will be in the catalog. Freeing women from sexism one city at a time is a worthy goal. Women have to recognize they have not be treated equitably first. It is stunning how many don't get that.

There's a lot of truth in Greece being a patriarchal country and the job market favoring men, while women are only seen as good for having babies. Ironically, as much as this society claims to love children, working women are fired after having them. It's against the law, but nothing is ever done.

However, many women like being pampered and dependent on husbands and parents despite their outward whining and complaining. An example of that is meeting women who have lived here all their lives or more than 10 years (if expats) who don't know the first thing about anything because they weren't proactive in finding out or carving a niche for themselves.

Those of us who love our independence and refuse to be helpless channel our energy into starting businesses, working in countries different than our husbands while remaining married, and advocate for causes. I consider myself one of these women.

Thank you for visiting and sharing your experience. And sorry for the strikes and ruckus, but that's an everyday part of living in Athens.
